  1. Interesting. But consider the literal monetary value of a "pfennig." It's the German equivalent of a "penny" (which derives from this word, actually). How does that affect your interpretation?

Regarding Colleen's comment on the worlds-within-worlds, consider how they might be re-creations or replications of a world: the model city replicates the real city, the Sea of Flames has replications, Frederick's bird book replicates real birds, Marie-Laure's Braille book a replication of a printed book. . . I could go on. Why so many replications of objects? How does that tie in to this idea? What does Werner's skill of triangulation replicate?

  3. Faith, good point on the parallel achievements that follow sacrifice. Consider, also, that Frederick and Jutta both suggest that Werner is sacrificing something more significant than sleep in his pursuit of his achievement.
